Common Greenshank
Chevalier aboyeur · Groenpootruiter
The common greenshank is the largest of the sandpipers regularly seen along our coast. Its long, robust, slightly upturned bill and greyish-green legs distinguish it from other species. Its powerful, repeated « tchiu-tchiu-tchiu » call has earned it the French name « aboyeur » (barker). A passage migrant in the marshes and polders of the Vendée, it frequents mudflats, lagoons and pond margins, where it actively hunts small fish, crustaceans and worms in shallow water.
