Black Stork
Cigogne noire · Zwarte ooievaar
The black stork is the shy relative of the white stork. Almost entirely black with green and purple iridescence on its back and wings, only its belly is white. Its bill and legs are bright red. Unlike the white stork that nests on rooftops in the middle of villages, the black stork is wary and prefers remote forests and undisturbed wetlands. Far rarer than its white cousin, it passes through the Vendée on its migration between northern Europe and Africa — every sighting is a special moment.
